THE GAP

The Gap in Mental Health

Mental health care is one of the most neglected areas of healthcare in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), contributing to a rising global burden of disease. Millions of individuals suffer from mental disorders that cause long-term distress, limit productivity, and diminish quality of life. Yet, despite the availability of cost-effective interventions, mental health services receive only a fraction of the necessary funding, leaving those in need without access to care.

The Reality on the Ground

Kenya

76–85%

of people with mental disorders go untreated
The Infrastructure
Over 53 million people, yet only ~120 registered psychiatrists (0.19 per 100k). Psychologists are scarcer at 0.03 per 100k. Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital offers only ~700 beds.
The Barriers
Underfunding (<2% of health budget), high costs (Ksh 6,000–15,000/session), stigma, and spiritual misconceptions delay treatment despite national policies (2015–2030).

Sierra Leone

98%

of people with severe mental illness receive no treatment
The Infrastructure

Nearly 8 million people with just one in-patient facility (Sierra Leone Psychiatric Teaching Hospital) treating ~150 patients. Historically, only 2 psychiatrists, 2 clinical psychologists, and 19 mental health nurses serve the nation.

The Barriers
Chronic workforce shortages outside the capital, deeply entrenched stigma, cultural beliefs, and extremely low public awareness.

Liberia

<1%

of the population has access to mental health care
The Infrastructure
Serving over 5 million people, the nation has only 2 psychiatrists and 1 psychiatric hospital.
The Barriers
Stigma, lack of funding, and the compounded psychological toll of civil war and Ebola. Community health workers are helping integrate MHPSS, but major challenges persist.

"Addressing this gap requires sustained commitment to accessible services, community-led support, and a national focus on mental health as a public priority."
